Data Center Cooling and Water Use

Almost every watt a server uses turns into heat, and cooling is usually the largest load at a data center after the IT equipment itself. The cooling design also decides how much water a site uses. Traditional air cooling moves air through computer room air handlers and chillers. Higher rack densities are pushing operators toward liquid cooling, either cold plates on the chips fed by coolant distribution units, or immersion tanks. Evaporative systems save energy but consume water; dry coolers and closed loops save water but use more energy on hot days.

This section explains the main approaches and how to compare them. Two metrics come up again and again: PUE, which shows how much power goes to overhead such as cooling, and WUE, which measures water used per unit of IT energy. Other guides cover CRAC and CRAH units, ASHRAE temperature guidelines, absorption chillers that run on waste heat, reusing data center heat, dust and sand filtration for harsh sites, and cooling through West Texas summers. Use the PUE calculator to see what overhead costs, and the water calculator to estimate gallons per day from IT load and WUE.
