Flare Gas and Stranded Gas to Power
Stranded gas is natural gas that has no economic way to reach a market. The most common case is associated gas from oil wells: when a well produces oil faster than pipelines and processing plants can take the gas that comes up with it, the operator may flare it. Flaring burns the gas at the site, which wastes the energy and releases carbon dioxide; venting releases methane directly, which does more harm to the climate. States and the EPA regulate both, and the rules have tightened.
Putting that gas to work on site is the idea behind flare gas to power. Generators at the well pad burn the gas and make electricity for oilfield equipment, bitcoin miners or modular data centers that can run where the gas is. The guides in this section cover why wells flare, how flare volumes are measured, Texas Railroad Commission permits, the EPA methane rules, North Dakota's Bakken experience, who owns flare gas and how royalties work, and how flexible loads such as bitcoin mining sell demand response to the grid. Use the gas-to-power calculator to estimate how many megawatts a gas stream can make.
